One of the requirements of a U visa is that the victim must submit a U visa certification that was completed and signed by an appropriate law enforcement officer or authorized public official. The victim has to submit Form I-918 Supplement B, U Nonimmigrant Status Certification. Various authorities can certify the form such as federal, state, and city law enforcement officers as well as prosecutors and judges. The form asks the certifying official to mention what happened from the victim’s perspective, how the victim has been helpful to the investigation and the victim’s personal information, among other things.
The certification must be signed with an original signature by the certifying official, so it is to the victim’s best benefit to keep a copy of the signed form. There is a deadline of 6 months (minus a day) in which the victim has to submit her U visa petition and the signing of the certification. By signing the U visa certification, the certifying official does not endorse what the victim alleged. The U visa certification is a strict requirement of the U visa application and there are no exceptions to it.
